This job was an example of what we call ‘an intelligent renovation’. On first sight, the ice blue Mk I 3000, owned by a customer in West Sussex, was pretty original and from the swage line upwards the panels and paint were fine, the chrome was good and the general appearance was pretty honest.
The problems started from the swage downwards. Like many cars, the doors had dropped and were letting the car down badly. The wings were bubbling and there were one or two dents, plus we were asked to install wing vents with CapeSport flashes.
The most problematic part of the job was the hardtop renovation. We knew that no-one stocked replacement screens so we used the hardtop itself as the tooling to make a one-off acrylic screen. We also managed to suspend the headlining on a frame with the headlining divided into three seamed sections just like the factory originals. The rear screen was levered into the opening and once the hardtop was secured to the car it looked like it grew there.
